Book Club Blogs...
Web 2.0 tools (i.e., blogging) help prepare students for various classes as well as the future. As an educator the biggest job is to give students experiences, creatively and academically to build them to be “whole learners.” My goal has always been to not only educate my students using traditional learning with technology. With a blog students are merging the traditional with technology because they are writing and communicating to various audiences which is definitely one of most state’s standards and it is important that teachers are meeting those state standards. Even though this standards are requirements we don’t let those be our excuse for not exposing our students to the technology, as well as, making education a good experience and purposeful.
Using "blogging" as a tool in the classroom is a great asset in many classes from art to photography. As a former English teacher the one tool, ironically, I was unable to get started using was blogging. I created a curriculum for my students to use a blog to discuss books they were reading. The idea was to get away from the "old fashion style” book reports and use the computer, ipods or even

cell phones to discuss books. For the students would be able to discuss what they were reading, meet a requirement and get feedback from their peers and the teacher immediately. Also using the “book club blog” students will have freedom, but there will be requirements they must meet by discussing the plot, characters, setting, conflicts and any other literary devices. The fact that blogging has minimum restrictions allows students to have fun with some guidance. I like the fact that this allowed me to get a quick assessment on what students were reading/comprehension, on writing, as well as how students engaged with one another. Blogging will and can be teacher and student friendly while moving the traditional to the 21st century!
